Club Charity Foundation Approves
Special Hurricane Grants to Four Non-Profits

The club's charity foundation Monday approved relief grants for four area non-profits organizations affected by Hurricane Irma receive relief grants. All four recipients were vetted by the club's Projects and Screening Committee. Each organization committed to provide progress feedback on the use of the funds.

SAFE HARBOR BOYS HOME - Project grant level $20,000

Safe Harbor is a resident boys home helping troubled teenagers turn their lives around using concepts of discipline, skill acquisition and mentoring by adults all focused around a nautical environment. As a result of Hurricane Irma, Safe Harbor lost a significant portion of its dockage. Although the home has raised $100,000 to replace the physical docks, there is a need for financial assistance to install electrical and plumbing services.

Safe Harbor Boys Home has twice been a recipient of grants from the Rotary Charity Foundation.

BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA - NORTH FLORIDA COUNCIL - Project grant level: $ 7,000

Hurricane Irma destroyed all three of the docks at the Boy Scout camp on the St. Johns River. Without dockage, programs such as canoeing, kayaking, rowing, sailing, motor boating, and water skiing are not possible.

The proposed grant helps to acquire flexible and durable JET docks contingent upon Boy Scouts raising the remaining $120,000 to complete the project.

MEMORIAL PARK ASSOCIATION - Project grant level: $ 6,500

Riverside's historic Memorial Park received an onslaught of damage from the rising waters of Hurricane Irma. The storm caused significant damage to the park's lawns, benches, trashcans and historic balustrade. The Memorial Park Association (MPA) is working to repair many of these areas and is concentrating on correcting erosion damage.

Due to the long-standing relationship between the MPA and our Rotary club — which led the city's effort to build the park in 1918 — the Foundation recommends approval to allocate a grant of $6,500 to provide repair and replacement materials.

SHEPHERDS'S HAVEN - Project grant level: $ 1,500

Shepherd’s Haven provides food for approximately 2,300 low-to-moderate income households in the St. Johns County region of Hastings. The organization operates out of the W. E. Harris Community Center and is the USDA commodity distributor for the southern part of St. Johns County.

Due to power surges during Hurricane Irma one of the main food freezers was damaged beyond repair. Shepherd’s Haven is requesting a new freezer and a small generator to use during future power outages.

The proposed grant is to be used to purchase a new freezer and generator.
